Bariatrics

What is it?

Bariatrics is a medical field that focuses on the prevention, treatment, and causes of obesity. It includes both obesity medicine and bariatric surgery.

Bariatric surgery, also known as weight loss surgery, is a type of procedure that can help people with obesity lose weight. These surgeries can:

  • Change the size and anatomy of the stomach to limit food intake
  • Alter the digestion process to improve fat metabolism
  • Reduce the hunger signals sent from the digestive system to the brain

Bariatric surgery can help normalize metabolism, including blood sugar, blood pressure, and cholesterol. It can also reduce the risk or reverse chronic diseases. Some types of bariatric surgery include: gastric bypass, sleeve gastrectomy, gastric band, and duodenal switch.
